COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team opened the 44 Farms Team Invitational at Texas A&M on Friday (April 11), with Savannah Sutherland and Elizabeth Tapper each setting records.
Sutherland returned to the track for her outdoor debut, winning the 400-meter hurdles in 55.28 seconds to set the meet and E.B. Cushing Stadium facility records. Sidney Green also ran in the event, finishing third with a season-best time of 57.71 to come just 0.24 seconds shy of her personal best.
Tapper was the second Wolverine to set a record, throwing for a personal-best 17.29 meters (56 feet, 8.75 inches) to break the program record and finish third. Tapper's best attempt came in the third round, with three of her six attempts being farther than 17.00m. Abigail Russell placed 11th (15.16m, 49-9) while Trinity Franklin placed 13th with a season-best mark of 14.88m (48-10).
Freshman Iliana Downing cleared a personal-best 4.11m (13-5.75) in the pole vault to finish second and come in at No. 6 on the program performers list. She is just the seventh Wolverine to clear 4.00m.
In the 1,500-meter run, five Wolverines finished in the top 10. Rylee Tolson (4:23.20) finished second, Mary Caroline Heinen (4:26.24) finished fourth, Alyna Lewis (4:27.61) finished seventh, Hannah Pricco (4:31.36) finished ninth and Lucy Petee (4:32.27) finished 10th. Tolson, Heinen, Lewis and Pricco posted personal bests, while Petee saw a season best.
The Maize and Blue will conclude the 44 Farms Team Invitational on Saturday (April 12) with action at E.B. Cushing Stadium starting at 5:30 p.m. CT with the discus throw.
