
Michigan Struggles Against UCLA in Midweek Matchup

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell to UCLA in a midweek non-conference matchup, suffering a 22-5 loss at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Tuesday night (March 4).
Michigan (6-5) recorded eight hits in the game, including a home run from Will Rogers, a double from Colby Turner, and six singles. On the mound, Kurt Barr got the start but struggled, failing to make it out of the first inning. Keegan O'Hearn made his debut in relief, striking out the first batter he faced and finishing with three strikeouts over 1.1 innings. Preston Barr also made his collegiate debut, entering in the fourth inning.
Michigan started strong in the first inning with three consecutive singles, the third from Jeter Ybarra bringing in Benny Casillas from second. A fielder's choice by Cole Caruso plated Mitch Voit to make it 2-0 Wolverines, before a strikeout ended the inning.
UCLA (10-3) responded in a big way, tallying 17 runs over the first four innings. The Bruins scored three runs in the first and second innings before erupting for nine in the third. They added two more in the fourth on just one hit.
Rogers got one run back for Michigan in the fifth inning, launching a solo home run. However, U-M could not add more in the frame. UCLA continued its offensive surge, plating five runs on four hits, including a home run, in the bottom half.
The Wolverines scored twice in the sixth. After a groundout, three consecutive hits, including an RBI double from Turner, brought in one run. Noah Miller followed with a groundout to score Joe Longo from third.
Brandon Newland took the mound in the bottom half of the sixth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning, holding UCLA scoreless for the first time in the game.
Joonsung Park drew a two-out walk in the seventh, but Michigan could not push across another run, falling 22-5 in a mercy-rule loss.
Michigan will wrap up its five-game California road trip on Wednesday (March 5) against UC Riverside. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. PT, with streaming available on ESPN+.
