
Sutherland Defends 400m Title, Tapper Sets Record as U-M Finishes Tied for 10th at Big Tens

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team closed out the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Saturday (March 1), tying for 10th place, highlighted by Savannah Sutherland's 400-meter dash title and Elizabeth Tapper setting the program shot put record at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
The Wolverines finished with 31 points. Oregon won the team title with 131 points, while Illinois (82) and USC (76) rounded out the top three.
The reigning 400-meter dash champion heading into the meet, Sutherland successfully defended her title with a time of 51.74 seconds to edge Yemi John of USC by just 0.02 seconds.
Tapper saw her best mark of the day on her third attempt, throwing for 18.26 meters (59 feet, 11 inches) to set the program shot put record for the fifth time this season. The sophomore sat in second heading into the final round, but a throw of 18.47m (60-7.25) from Jaida Ross of Oregon moved Tapper into third place.
Aasia Laurencin looked to defend her 60-meter hurdles title but earned a second-place finish with a personal-best time of 7.97, the second time in her career she has broken eight seconds. Laurencin was just 0.005 seconds behind winner Aaliyah McCormick of Oregon.
Samantha Hastie scored two points for U-M in the 800-meter run, finishing seventh with a personal-best time of 2:05.65 to come just 0.10 seconds shy of the No. 10 mark on the program performers list.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Sidney Green, Amare Harlan, Sutherland and Trinity Henderson scored five points for Michigan, finishing fourth with a time of 3:35.90. The time comes in at No. 6 on the program performers list.
The Wolverines will close out their indoor season on Friday and Saturday, March 14-15, at the NCAA Championships in Virginia Beach, Va.
