
Tapper Sets Program Shot Put Record for Fourth Straight Meet at Michigan Invite

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Elizabeth Tapper of the University of Michigan women's track and field team set the program shot put record for the fourth straight meet on Saturday (Feb. 8) as the Wolverines hosted the Michigan Invitational at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
Tapper had a strong first attempt of 16.97 meters (55 feet, 8.25 inches) to give her the lead heading into the finals. Her fourth attempt came in at 17.08m (56-0.50) before setting the program standard of 17.77m (58-3.75) on her fifth attempt.
The Wolverines earned three other top-10 finishes in the shot put. Abigail Russell finished fourth (14.98m/49-01.75), Trinity Franklin finished fifth (14.82m/48-07.50) and Clare McNamara finished seventh (13.73m/45-00.50). Franklin and McNamara's efforts were season bests.
Russell also competed in the weight throw, finishing fourth with a personal best of 19.13m (62-9.25). The mark comes in at No. 6 on the program performer's list.
Maya Anderson finished first in the long jump with a mark of 5.68m (18-7.75), just 0.04m shy of her personal best. Gabriella Newman cleared a season-best 1.72m (5-7.75) in the high jump.
Savannah Sutherland came just 0.01 seconds from setting the 60-meter dash program standard, running 7.35 seconds in the preliminaries before running 7.34 in the finals for the win. Sutherland's mark is No. 2 on the program performer's list. Aasia Laurencin (7.49) and Amare Harlan (7.53) also ran in the event, finishing second and fourth, respectively.
In the 200-meter dash, U-M finished 1-2 with personal-best performances from Amare Harlan (23.58) and Payton Smith (23.74). Harlan's time comes in at No. 2 on the program performer's list, while Smith's comes in at No. 4.
Smith posted her second top-10 time of the day in the 400-meter dash, finishing first with a time of 53.20 to move up to No. 4 on the performance list. Sidney Green finished fourth with a season-best time of 54.77.
Five Wolverines finished in the top 10 of the mile, as Mary Caroline Heinen finished first (4:52.32), Leah Hill finished second (4:52.47), Gabbie Michael finished fourth (4:57.88), Natalie VanOtteren finished seventh (5:04.82), and CC Jones finished ninth (5:13.37). All five saw personal-best times.
The Maize and Blue will hit the road for the Tiger Paw Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 14-15) in Clemson, S.C.
