
Women’s Track and Field to Open Postseason Competition

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team will open the postseason at the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Friday-Saturday (Feb. 28-March 1) at Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavillion in Indianapolis, Ind. Both days of the meet will be streamed live on B1G+.
Notes
• Wolverines to watch include Aasia Laurencin (60-meter hurdles), Savannah Sutherland (400-meter dash), Payton Smith (400-meter dash), Amare Harlan (200-meter dash, long jump), Mary Caroline Heinen (5,000-meter run), Elizabeth Tapper (shot put), Abigail Russell (shot put, weight throw).
• The shot put squad remains at No. 5 in the latest USTFCCCA Event Squad rankings.
• Michigan finished fifth at the 2024 Big Ten Indoor Championships, with Sutherland (400-meter dash, 51.67 seconds) and Laurencin (60-meter hurdles, 8.01) taking home individual titles.
• In addition to the individual titles, the team also earned four medals (silver, distance medley relay, 11:13.73; Penelopea Gordon, silver, 800-meter run, 2:05.34; Sam Tran, bronze, 3,000-meter run, 9:19.06; Corinne Jemison, bronze, shot put, 16.82 meters/55 feet, 2.25 inches) and 16 podium finishes.
• U-M sat in eighth after day one of competition at last year's championships, with the DMR team of Samantha Hastie, Sidney Green, Gordon and Tran finishing second with a time of 11:13.17. Samantha Saenz scored four points for the Maize and Blue with a fifth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run (16:15.28).
• Jemison and Maria Deaviz both saw top-eight finishes in the shotput to give the team seven points on day two. Jemison set the program standard which has since been broken by Tapper (17.77m/58-3.75).
• Laurencin and Sutherland earned were each first team All-Big Ten, while Hastie, Gordon, Green, and Tran were second team All-Big Ten.
