ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team forced 45 turnovers, recording 25 steals, to race past Canisius 100-40 in the season opener on Tuesday evening (Nov. 4) at Crisler Center. The 25 steals were the sixth-highest total in program history, with Canisius committing more turnovers than points scored.
U-M had four players score in double figures, led by Mila Holloway's all-around game of 21 points, five rebounds, eight assists and seven steals. Olivia Olson went for 18, Ashley Sofilkanich reached the 1,000-point mark for her career with 14 points and Te'Yala Delfosse chipped in 14 points and six boards off the bench. Brooke Quarles Daniels had eight steals in the contest, with eight Wolverines recording at least one takeaway. U-M shot 51.9 percent from the field (41-for-79) and converted on 36 fast-break points.
Sofilkanich scored the first bucket of the game, giving her 1,000 for her career, and Michigan continued to stay ahead as the Wolverines scored 10 of the first 12 points. Canisius answered with a 9-2 run to get within a point, 12-11, with just under five minutes remaining. The Michigan defense stepped up the rest of the way, allowing just three more points over the final 4:46 for a 23-14 lead after 10 minutes.
Canisius hung around in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but a 9-2 run that was capped by six straight points from Sofilkanich forced a Griffs timeout with 4:42 on the second-quarter clock and Michigan's lead at 37-21. Olson scored eight straight right before the halftime break, including back-to-back three-pointers for a 51-26 U-M lead after 20 minutes.
U-M held Canisius to just eight points in the third quarter, outscoring the Golden Griffins, 28-6. Holloway turned in six points in the stanza, with seven Wolverines scoring. Michigan continued to apply defensive pressure, forcing another 13 turnovers in the quarter to result in 15 points.
The Wolverines led by as many as 60 points in the final 10 minutes, with a pair of free throws from Delfosse in the waning seconds allowing Michigan to hit the century mark. McKenzie Mathurin (two), Jessica Fields (four) and Ciara Byars (three) each scored their first career points in their freshman debuts.
Michigan completes a two-game homestand on Sunday (Nov. 9), hosting Harvard and former U-M assistant coach Carrie Moore at noon inside Crisler Center. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
