ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team (4-1) will complete action in the Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Showcase at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 23) against Syracuse (5-0). The game is set for noon and can be seen on FS1.
Notes
• Michigan's rally fell just short in the opening game of the Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Showcase, with No. 1 UConn hanging on for a 72-69 win on Friday night (Nov. 21). U-M was down by as many as 20 points and cut the deficit to one in the closing minute. Â
• Michigan leads the all-time series with Syracuse, 5-0. This is the first meeting between the teams since the 2019 Big Ten/ACC Challenge at Crisler (Dec. 5), where Michigan rallied for an 84-76 overtime win. This contest marks the first neutral-site matchup between the teams.
• Syla Swords scored 29 points in Michigan's loss to No. 1 UConn. She hit a career-best eight triples in the contest, becoming the third Wolverine in program history to hit at least eight in a game, joining Katelynn Flaherty and Elissa Brett. In Michigan's three games over the last 13 months against No. 1 teams, Swords is averaging 28.7 points per game.
• This is the third time that Michigan is playing in the Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Showcase after playing Florida State in 2019 and Baylor in 2021. U-M is 1-2 in the event, picking up an overtime win over No. 5 Baylor in the 2021 edition. Â
• Michigan vaulted up to No. 6 in this week's Associated Press poll, marking the second-highest ranking in program history. It's the highest ranking for Michigan since coming in at No. 6 on Feb. 21, 2022. With the men's team in at No. 7, it is also the first time both teams are in the top 10 at the same time.
• Michigan will face off against former Wolverine Laila Phelia in the contest. Phelia spent last season at Texas and is finishing her collegiate career at Syracuse.
• U-M has a trio of double-figure scorers in Olivia Olson (17.8 ppg), Swords (15.6 ppg) and Mila Holloway (12.8 ppg).
• The Wolverines are fifth in the country in scoring offense at 93.2 points per game, shooting 51.5 percent for the floor -- good for eighth nationally. Michigan has led wire-to-wire in four of its five games.
• Te'Yala Delfosse played a career-high 26 minutes against UConn, turning in seven points with a career-high nine rebounds and two assists. On the season, she is averaging 9.6 points and a team-best 6.0 rebounds in 19.4 minutes per game.
• Holloway has controlled the offense this season, handing out at least five assists in four of Michigan's five games. She is averaging 6.0 assists per game, good for fourth in the Big Ten.
• Michigan is in the midst of a three-game swing away from Crisler Center. Next up for the Wolverines is a short trip to Detroit to face Detroit Mercy on Wednesday (Nov. 26) at 5 p.m.
