ORLANDO, Fla. -- Max Dahlin of the University of Michigan men's tennis team is moving on to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Singles Championship after winning his third-round match on Thursday (Nov. 20) on the USTA National Campus. Hours later, Dahlin and Bjorn Swenson won their second-round match in the NCAA Doubles Championship to earn All-America honors and advance to the quarterfinals.
Dahlin is the only player competing in both singles and doubles quarterfinals.
Dahlin's victory came over Michigan State's Matthew Forbes 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (3) as he handed the Spartan just his second singles loss of the season and improved his own record to 9-0.
Dahlin and Forbes held serve before Dahlin broke Forbes on deuce point to take a 6-5 edge and consolidated to win the first set 7-5. Forbes answered back with two breaks in the second set to win 6-1, forcing a deciding third set. Again, the two players stayed on serve to set up a tiebreaker. Dahlin jumped out to a 3-1 advantage, but Forbes battled to come within one, 4-3. Dahlin rattled off three straight points to capture the 7-6 (3) victory.
In doubles play, sitting at 5-5 in the first set, Swenson and Dahlin consolidated a break to take the advantage 7-5. The pair broke UCLA's Spencer Johnson and Emon van Lobel Sels on the first serve of the second set, but UCLA broke back twice to take the set 6-4, setting up a 10-point third-set tiebreak.
Swenson and Dahlin went up early, leading 6-3, but UCLA rebounded with four straight points to put itself in front 7-6. The Wolverines halted the run with four straight points to clinch the match with a 10-7 win to run their record to 5-0 on the season.
The Wolverines will be back in action at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships on Friday (Nov. 21) at the USTA National Campus in Orlando. Dahlin will face NC State's Martin Borisiouk (12-4) in a singles quarterfinal match, then he and Swenson will face Ohio State's Brandon Carpico and Nikita Filin in a doubles quarterfinal.
