SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Sophomore Will Horcoff buried the overtime winner as the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team defeated Notre Dame, 2-1, inside Compton Family Arena to complete a weekend sweep and open Big Ten play.
Junior Jayden Perron and senior Luca Fantilli earned the assists on the 3x3 goal as the Wolverines controlled possession throughout the extra period. Fantilli worked from the point and fed Perron in the right circle, who quickly found Horcoff on the left side. Horcoff rifled in his second game-winner of the season.
The contest marked the team's first overtime game of the season, as Michigan (9-1, 2-0 B1G) opened conference play with a 1-0 start while claiming five of a possible six points in the first Big Ten series of the year.
Notre Dame (3-4-1, 0-2 B1G) took the lead in the first period before Michigan tied it early in the third, as the Wolverines came out of the second intermission on a mission.
Sophomore defenseman Dakoda Rhéaume-Mullen rang a shot off the right post just over a minute into the third period as Michigan pressed for the equalizer.
The Wolverines broke through at 3:23 when Nick Moldenhauer displayed his skill with an impressive individual effort to bury his second goal of the season. After carrying the puck into the Irish zone on the right wing, Moldenhauer attempted a seam pass to a teammate, but the puck deflected off a defender and popped into the air. The junior batted it back down toward the crease, then followed his shot to bury the rebound and tie the game, 1-1. Perron and Kienan Draper earned the assists on Moldenhauer's game-tying tally.
After coincidental penalties for roughing in the first frame, Notre Dame struck with a 4x4 goal at 13:46.
Michigan's power-play unit had a strong look on its second opportunity at 8:36 of the second period, but a Notre Dame defender blocked a shot in front of an open net before clearing the puck out of danger.
U-M entered the second intermission trailing 1-0, despite holding a 20-14 advantage in shots on goal.
The Wolverines came out firing in the third, outshooting Notre Dame 17-5 and applying relentless pressure. Michigan picked up a late penalty with 1:30 remaining when Tyler Duke was called for holding while backchecking in the neutral zone. The best chance of the Irish power play came shorthanded, as Moldenhauer broke free for a one-on-one that was stopped, and Rhéaume-Mullen's rebound attempt was also denied to preserve the tie and force overtime.
Notre Dame carried 30 seconds of power-play time into the extra session, but Michigan killed it off before taking control and finding the winner.
Jack Ivankovic made 19 saves as Michigan finished with a 40-20 advantage in shots on goal.
Next week, Michigan returns home to Ann Arbor for a two-game series against undefeated Wisconsin on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 7-8).
