ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team claimed victory in its first Big Ten series of the season on Sunday (Mar. 24) defeating Purdue 11-3 in five innings at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field at Carol Hutchins Stadium.
Lilly Vallimont led a potent Wolverines offensive attack with three RBI and going 1-for-2 at the plate. Ella McVey and Indiana Langford joined Vallimont added two RBI each, while three additional Wolverines drove in a single run. Starting pitcher Erin Hoehn recovered after a three-run first inning by shutting out the Boilermakers over her final three innings to earn the victory in the circle.
The Boilermakers struck first, reaching the plate three times in the top of the first inning off an RBI single and a two-run home run to left-center field. The Wolverines clawed back in their half of the inning, batting around the order to grab to an 8-3 lead after one full frame. Vallimont later an RBI in the bottom of the second inning with a sacrifice fly to drive in Maddie Erickson to push the U-M advantage to 9-3.
Michigan found the final two runs it needed to force a run-rule situation in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ella Stephenson knocked one over the infield and a botched infield-fly catch brought Vallimont hone from third with the bases loaded. Hannah George took to the circle in the top of the fifth and closed the game, stranding the game-extending Boilermaker baserunner at third to seal the win.
The Wolverines go for a sweep against Purdue on Monday (March 25) at Carol Hutchins Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., and the series finale will be streamed live on B1G+.
