ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team took the series sweep against Purdue on Monday (March 25), defeating the Boilermakers in a 6-2 victory.
Lauren Derkowski earned her ninth win of the season in the circle, allowing just two runs in a complete-game performance. Four Wolverines posted at least one RBI in the contest, with Maddie Erickson leading the charge after sending a three-run homer out of the ballpark in the bottom of the sixth.
An early one-run lead for the Boilermakers was wiped off the board by Keke Tholl, who mashed a solo home run to deep center left to put the score at 1-1 after two full innings. A bases-loaded walk of Lilly Vallimont in the next inning brought home Indiana Langford, giving the Maize and Blue a 2-1 lead.
Purdue tied things back up at two a piece in the top of the fourth inning, when a potential throw-out at the plate was ruled as safe on the field and subsequently confirmed on replay. Michigan wasted no time to swing back out front, however, as Langford beat an infield throw to bring home pinch runner Lexi Dellamonica for the Wolverines' third run of the game.
The Maize and Blue capped the day's scoring off in the bottom of the sixth, when Erickson extended U-M's margin with a three-run home run well down the left field line. Though Purdue was able to record one last baserunner in the top of the seventh, Derkowski sealed the victory without allowing the runner to advance past first base.
The Wolverines will conclude their five-game homestand on Wednesday (March 27) in a non-conference matchup against the Toledo Rockets. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on Big Ten Plus.
