LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team fell 4-0 to the University of Southern California this afternoon (February 27) at Marks Stadium.
The Wolverines pushed the Trojans in doubles going to a tiebreaker in the deciding match. Nino Ehrenschneider and Alex Cairo paired up for the first time in doubles and cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 3 over Volodymyr Iakubenko and Samuel Rubell. The duo of Karl Lee and Oscar Weightman were able to take the final two games from Will Cooksey and Patorn Hanchaikul to finish 6-4 at No. 2 doubles. At No. 1, No. 30 ranked Gavin Young and Jacob Bickersteth and Peter Makk and Lodewjik Weststrate went into a tiebreaker with the Trojans coming out on top 7-6 (7-0).
Four singles matches were forced into third sets, but just one was completed before USC took the three points it needed to clinch the match.
USC's No. 63 ranked Makk took matching 6-1 wins off of No. 18 Young at No. 1 singles to put USC ahead 2-0, while Iakubenko won 6-2, 6-4 against Cooksey at No. 4.
Bickersteth won his first set 6-2, but took a 3-1 lead in the second before Weightman battled back to take the set 7-5. Weightman jumped out with the lead in the third and rode it to a 6-2 final.Â
Hanchaikul and Bjorn Swenson were both in third sets, while Nicholas Steiglehner was in a second-set tiebreaker when the teams called the match.
Michigan will play in a three-day invitational at Arizona State beginning on Friday (March 1).
