Leaders and Best
Chicago native Nimari Burnett scored a team-best 15 points while shooting 6-for-8 from the field and 3-for-5 from three-point range. Terrance Williams II scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Tarris Reed Jr. posted 13 points and six boards.
The Turning Point
After Burnett scored eight straight points during a lead-taking 10-2 Michigan run early in the second half, Northwestern answered immediately with an 8-0 run to take a seven-point lead and never look back.
First Half
After Northwestern (18-6, 9-4 Big Ten) scored a layup on its opening possession, Michigan (8-18, 3-12 Big Ten) went on a 9-0 run to take an early lead. The Wildcats stopped the run with a dunk, but another 7-1 U-M stint gave it a 16-5 advantage at the 13:23 mark.
Later in the first half, with the Wolverines leading 28-19, Northwestern went on an 8-0 run to pull within one. Burnett scored the next five U-M points to end the run, but the Wildcats tied the game at 34 with 1:27 remaining and made a three-pointer just two seconds before the buzzer to send the Wolverines to the locker room trailing 37-34.
Second Half
The Wolverines outscored Northwestern 10-6 to reclaim the lead in the opening minutes of the second half, with eight points coming from Burnett, and Michigan led 44-43 with 15:36 to play.
Immediately after Burnett's go-ahead three-pointer, Northwestern went on an 8-0. U-M went the next six minutes without a field goal and the Wolverines' deficit ballooned to nine points by the 9:25 mark.
Reed scored the next 10 U-M points over the next eight minutes, but Northwestern grew its lead as high as 20 during that span as it handed Michigan a 76-62 loss.
