Michigan Unable to Complete Second-Half Comeback Against No. 3 Purdue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team dropped its second matchup against No. 3 Purdue 84-76 on Sunday (Feb. 25) at Crisler Center.
Leaders and Best
Dug McDaniel was U-M's leading scorer with 19 points and added a team-leading six assists. Nimari Burnett scored 12 points and Terrance Williams II scored 11 points while pulling in five rebounds. Will Tschetter and Tray Jackson each pitched in 10 points.
The Turning Point
An 11-2 run gave Purdue a 45-34 lead with 1:21 left in the first half to change the game's momentum, and U-M only came within seven points of the Boilermakers for the remainder of the game.
Second Half
Purdue (25-3, 14-3 Big Ten) grew its lead to 14 points early in the second half as Michigan (8-20, 3-14 Big Ten) struggled from the field. The Wolverines were able to pull within nine points multiple times, but Purdue responded each time. With 11:15 remaining, U-M cut its deficit to seven points (64-57) after shooting 5-for-6 from the field. The Boilermakers responded by making two straight layups to lead 68-57 with 10 minutes left.
Michigan cut the deficit to 10 points on back-to-back Burnett layups, but Purdue made four straight field goals to extend its lead to 12 (78-66) with six minutes to play. With 3:15 left to go, Jace Howard split a pair of free throws to get U-M back to within seven points, 78-71.
Michigan again cut the deficit to seven with 1:49 on the clock thanks to a Burnett three-pointer but missed its last four field-goal attempts in the final minute and the Wolverines fell to the Boilermakers.
First Half
After missing its first shot of the day, Michigan went on to make four straight field goals and McDaniel cashed in on two three-pointers to put U-M up 10-4 four minutes into the game. U-M took a seven-point lead off a three-point play from Tschetter and the Wolverines went up 22-15 with 10:37 left.
Purdue went on an 8-0 run to erase the U-M lead and took its first lead of the day, but a three-pointer from Jackson put the Wolverines back in front 25-23 with 8:08 left.
Michigan fell behind again but pulled within two of the Boilermakers at the 4:29 mark. After that, Purdue went on an 11-2 to run to lead 45-34 with 1:21 left in the first. Purdue outscored Michigan 13-4 in the final four and a half minutes as the Wolverines went into halftime trailing 47-36.
What's Next
The Wolverines will travel to Piscataway, N.J., to face Rutgers on Thursday (Feb. 29) at Jersey Mike's Arena. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m., and the matchup will be broadcast live on FS1.
Notes
• Tschetter made his second start of the season and first since Dec. 16 against Eastern Michigan.
• With six assists, McDaniel now has 12 games of five-plus assists, his first since Jan. 27 versus Iowa.
• Jackson posted his third double-figure scoring game of the season.
