
Michigan Unable to Overcome Shooting Struggles in Road Loss at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team lost to Rutgers 82-52 on Thursday (Feb. 29) at Jersey Mike's Arena in its second meeting of the season with the Scarlet Knights.

Michigan had two players in double figures, led by Dug McDaniel, who had 13 points and a team-high four assist. Tarris Reed Jr. added 12 points and pulled in eight rebounds.
First Half
Rutgers (15-13, 7-10 Big Ten) made its first seven shots of the game to take a 16-4 lead with 15:24 to play on a 14-3 run. Michigan (8-21, 3-15 Big Ten) struggled in the first five minutes, going 1-for-5 from the field and suffering a long scoring drought after Reed split a pair of free throws.
Midway through the first, Michigan was shooting 31.3 percent (5-for-16) from the field after a layup from Will Tschetter cut its deficit to 12. Rutgers extended its lead, shooting 5-for-7 and capitalizing on six U-M turnovers to lead 30-14 with 9:13 remaining in the half.
Michigan found itself in a 25-point hole as Rutgers was on an 11-0 run with 5:28 left. From that point, the Scarlet Knights did not score again and missed its next seven shots. That, coupled with a 10-0 Michigan run sparked by a three-pointer from McDaniel with four minutes to left on the clock, cut the U-M deficit to 15 at halftime, 41-26.
Second Half
After Terrance Williams II made the first basket of the second half, U-M missed its next four shots. Rutgers made four consecutive shots as part of a 9-0 run to go up 50-28 at the 17:26 mark.
Michigan could not get the momentum to swing its way as it made 2-of-11 from the field at the 10-minute mark, trailing 61-36. Rutgers remained in control for the rest of the way as U-M made only one of its last six shots to end the game, falling 82-52.

Michigan will remain on the road, traveling to Columbus, Ohio, for a showdown against Ohio State on Sunday (March 3) at Value City Arena. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on CBS.
