
Michigan to Head to Bloomington for Indiana Classic

• U-M's Indiana Classic Opener against Saint Francis Canceled (2/17/24)
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan water polo team (6-5, 1-0 CWPA) will stay in the Midwest and travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the Indiana Classic, Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 17-18). U-M will start the four-game tournament with a matchup with Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday (Feb. 17) at 10:15 a.m. before taking on Salem at 5:45 p.m. The Wolverines will close out the event Sunday (Feb. 18) with games against Iona (10:15 a.m.) and California Baptist (2 p.m.).
Notes
• The Wolverines will take on conference foe Saint Francis and Salem for the second time this season. At the Wolverine Invitational in January, the Maize and Blue comfortably defeating the Red Flash 18-2 and the Tigers 20-3 in their initial meetings.
• U-M returns to the pool after a 2-2 weekend at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif., defeating then-No. 12 UC Santa Barbara and then-No. 6 UC Irvine. Three of Michigan's six wins this season have come against ranked opponents.
• Kata Utassy continues to lead the charge offensively for the Maize and Blue, boasting 44 points which ranks fourth in the country. Utassy regained her shooting form at the Triton Invitational, scoring 10 goals in four games including five in the opener against UC Santa Barbara.
• Sammi Monroe has found her form offensively, ranking second on the team with 22 points. Monroe has logged two or more tallies in each of the last three games, including a hat trick in the win over UC Irvine.
• Libby Alsemgeest is wreaking havoc in the middle of the pool, drawing 68 ejections in 11 games this season. Alsemgeest has provided a spark on the scoresheet as well, scoring 16 goals and adding four assists.
• A versatile two-way player, Lola Ciruli leads the team with 13 steals and has posted 19 points in 11 starts. Ciruli also gets the Wolverines off to a good start with her squad-best 10 sprint wins.
• Alex Brown is a steadying presence in goal for the Maize and Blue, having registered 104 saves and stopping more than half of the shots on target she has faced this season. The graduate student has logged nine saves or more in nine of her 11 appearances in 2024.
• Michigan has never lost to the four opponents it will face this weekend, owning a combined 40-0 record against Cal Baptist, Iona, Saint Francis and Salem.
