ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan water polo team defeated No. 25-ranked Brown, 12-5, on Sunday (April 12) at Canham Natatorium to secure a third-place finish at the CWPA Championship.

Michigan's offense was powered by CWPA first-team All-Conference selections Ari Karampetsou and Emma Gustafsson, who each recorded hat tricks. Issy Jackson made an early defensive impact with a field block and two steals in the opening quarter, and added two goals and four drawn exclusions on the day.

The Wolverines (18-10) opened the scoring as Harriet Dickens converted from just inside the six-meter line. Back-to-back penalty goals from Gustafsson and Karampetsou pushed the lead to 3-0. In the final seconds of the first, Riley Chapple connected with Kaia Levenfeld in front of the cage, giving Michigan a 4-0 advantage heading into the second.

Following a double exclusion, Brown (14-12) got on the board, but Jackson quickly responded by stealing the ball from the goalkeeper and finishing on an open net. The teams traded goals throughout the remainder of the half, with Karampetsou and Bailee Swindells each finding the back of the net. Jackson added her second goal with 20 seconds left before halftime, finishing a pass from Karampetsou to give Michigan an 8-4 lead at the break.

In the third frame, Gustafsson drew an exclusion and converted the ensuing penalty opportunity. Karampetsou completed her hat trick shortly after, while Sophia Bunnell anchored a shutout defensive frame to keep the score at 10-4 heading into the fourth.

Gustafsson capped her hat trick in the final period, and Chapple, the senior captain, added a late goal in her final game in the Maize and Blue to seal the victory.
