SAVOY, Ill. -- The University of Michigan men's cross country team earned a fifth-place finish (158 points) at the Big Ten Championships on Friday (Nov. 1) at the Orange and Blue Golf Course.
Wisconsin (46 points) won the Big Ten Title, while Washington (58 points) finished second. Oregon (58 points) and Michigan State (125) finished third and fourth, respectively.
A pair of Wolverines sat in the top-10 through the first three kilometers, with Luke Venhuizen in seventh and Caleb Jarema at eighth. Trent McFarland was close behind the duo in 13th.
Jarema moved into fifth place at the halfway mark before falling to 16th through five kilometers. Jack Spamer moved up from 44th at the 3K mark to 20th at the 5K mark, while Nathan Lopez was in 30th place with the final three kilometers to go.
Lopez moved ahead and crossed the finish as the first U-M finisher, 26th overall in a personal-best time of 23:15.1. Jarema and Spamer finished in 27th and 28th place, respectively, both posting a personal-best time of 23:18.5.
McFarland (38th) and Venhuizen (39th) finished next, with McFarland crossing the in 23:30.5 and Venhuizen in 23:31.6. Both times were personal bests.
The Wolverines will continue with postseason competition on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Great Lakes Regional in Norton, Ohio.
