
Venhuizen Leads Maize and Blue, U-M Finishes Sixth at NCAA Regionals

NORTON, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's cross country team earned a sixth-place finish (150 points) at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday (Nov. 15) at the Silver Creek Metro Park.
Notre Dame won the meet (70 points) and Wisconsin (82) finished second. Butler and Michigan State (104 points), and Purdue (149) rounded out the top-five teams. The Fighting Irish and Badgers both earned automatic bids to next Saturday's (Nov. 23) NCAA Championships.
Jack Spamer was the lead Wolverine through the first two kilometers, sitting in 16th ahead of Trent McFarland (22nd), Luke Venhuizen (24th), and Caleb Jarema (25th).
Venhuizen took the lead at the halfway mark, moving up four spots to No. 20. Nathan Lopez also made positive movement through the first five kilometers, improving nine spots to sit in 33rd.
With just one kilometer to go, Venhuizen maintained his pace (24th) while Spamer moved into 25th place. Venhuizen moved up two spots to cross the finish line first for the Wolverines in 22nd place with a personal best time of 29:43.9, and earned All-Region honors as a top-25 finisher.
McFarland finished 28th (29:51.8) and Spamer finished 29th (29:52.1). Spamer's mark was a personal best, 1:23 better than his previous best.
The Maize and Blue will learn its NCAA Championships fate during the NCAA Selection Show, which will be streamed live on Saturday (Nov. 16) at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com. If selected, Michigan will head to Madison, Wis. for the NCAA Championships.
