CHICAGO -- Nathan Lopez and Trent McFarland each placed in the top 11 as the University of Michigan men's cross country team finished second at the 47th Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invite at Sydney R. Tom Cooney Men's 8k Championship Race
After a slow start, the Wolverines moved from seventh to second place between the first and third kilometers behind McFarland's early push into third. Meanwhile, Lopez methodically worked his way into the top 10 through the middle portion of the race, helping Michigan establish a strong hold on second place.
Brendan Herger's late push helped cut Michigan's 46-point deficit at the 5k mark to just three points, but the Wolverines ultimately could not overtake the Wildcats. Lopez crossed the finish line eighth, leading Michigan for the sixth straight scored meet dating back to last season, while McFarland followed closely behind in 11th with a career-best time of 23:05.49.
All 10 Wolverines entered in the championship race either recorded an 8-kilometer career best or made their collegiate cross country debut.
Men's 8k Open Race
Michigan entered five runners in the open race and placed second of four teams with 50 points. Aiden Sullivan and Henry Dixon finished third and fourth overall, respectively, to lead the Wolverines. Dixon and sophomore Brennan McEwen made their collegiate cross country debuts, while Sullivan recorded a career-best time of 24:01.11.
Michigan will head to Madison, Wis., for the Nuttycombe Invitational on Friday, Oct. 9. The men's race is scheduled to begin at 11:10 a.m. CT.
