ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis teams opens the 2024 spring campaign on Monday (Jan. 15) hosting DePaul at 11 a.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines will travel to Tennessee to take on the Volunteers on Thursday (Jan. 18) for a 4:30 p.m. match. Admission to all regular-season matches at the VTC is free of charge.
Notes
• Michigan is coming off a historic 2022-23 season that saw the Wolverines reach the NCAA Quarterfinals for the second straight campaign. The Wolverines lost half of their six starters from that squad, including Ondrej Styler, the national runner-up in singles, four-time All-American Andrew Fenty and two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection Patrick Maloney.
• Returning to the courts are Gavin Young, Nino Ehrenschneider, Jacob Bickersteth as well as Will Cooksey, Bjorn Swenson, Nicholas Steiglehner, Mert Oral and Patorn Hanchaikul. Alex Cairo is the lone freshman on the roster.
• Bickersteth had a quality fall season with the best record on the team -- 9-3 in singles play -- and also had a six-match win streak. In doubles, Bickersteth was matched with several teammates but had the most success with Cooksey, as the duo went 4-2.
• Young made a run in the ITA Fall Nationals after he qualified by reaching the semifinals of the ITA All-American Championships in October. Young defeated five ranked opponents, including No. 15 Michael Zheng (Columbia) who ended Young's season in the NCAA Singles Tournament last spring. Young also had two match wins over No. 2 Chris Rodesch (UVa), No. 12 JJ Tracy (OSU), No. 22 Peter Makk (USC) and No. 58 Justin Schlageter (Oklahoma).
• Ehrenschenider and Young went 5-2 as a doubles pair. Both have experience as each qualified for the NCAA Doubles with then-partner Fenty, Young in 2023, Ehrenschneider in 2022.
• Michigan is 7-0 versus DePaul in the all time series with the teams last meeting in 2004.
• Michigan earned a 4-1 win over Tennessee last January at the Varsity Tennis Center in a top-10 match up as the Wolverines were ranked fifth and the Vols sixth. All-time, Michigan is 9-4 in the all-time series.
