BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team scored points in six events on the final day of action at the 2023 Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Sunday (May 14), closing the weekend with a fifth-place finish behind 56 points at the Billy Hayes Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana.Â
Despite missing the beginning of the outdoor season and having just three meets under his belt heading into the weekend, senior Joshua Zeller earned silver in the event final of the 110-meter hurdles, good for eight points towards the team score as well as the second-fastest mark in U-M's program history. He ran an extremely competitive race, fighting for the lead with Nebraska's Darius Luff, and finished just eight-hundredths of second behind Luff with a time of 13.40. Zeller's time of 13.19 during the 2022 championships a year ago still stands as the Big Ten and program record in the event.
Dubem Amene had another top-three finish as he took third in the 400-meter finals. The junior finished with a time of 46.20 after fighting hard in the race's final stretch, earning six points toward the team score.
In the 1,500-meter final, Nick Foster, Arjun Jha, and Riley Flemington ran in a race that strung out early on. Foster managed to hang in, attempting to chase down Penn State's Evan Dorenkamp in the final lap and closing the gap to finish third (3:43.06). Jha's final lap made the difference for his race, in which he finished fifth (3:43.68), as he ran the fastest final 400 meters of any runner in the race with a split of 56.54 seconds. Flemington ran an impressive race in his first Big Ten final appearance, finishing ninth (3:46.84) after vying for a scoring spot for most of the race.
Tom Brady and Oli Raimond ran an impressive 5,000-meter race, with both runners scoring points. Brady hung with the top group of runners for the entire race, outkicking Wisconsin's Bob Liking in the last 100 meters and finishing third with a time of 13:56.70. Raimond also ran a good race, keeping All-American Jake Gebhardt of Indiana in his sights for the majority of the race and nearly chasing him down in the last 100 meters. He ultimately finished sixth in a time of 14:10.67, grabbing three points for Michigan.
In the discus throw, Zane Forist made his first Big Ten final and scored points for Michigan. The freshman's performance was highlighted by a 55.01 meter (180 feet, 5 inches) throw on his first attempt -- a top-ten program mark. Forist finished eighth overall, earning a point for the Wolverines, while Eli Winter took twenty-fifth with a best throw of 47.55 (156 feet).
The final event of the day was the 4x400-meter relay, run by Jacob Koerner, Dubem Amene, Lawrence Gilliam and Cole Johnson. The quad finished eighth with a time of 3:10.68 to earn an additional point for Michigan.
The Wolverines will continue postseason action with the NCAA East Preliminaries in Jacksonville, Florida, May 24-27.
