
U-M Men Complete Second Day of Competition on California Coast

The University of Michigan men's track and field team competed in three meets along California's west coast on Friday (April 14) at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, the Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance and the Beach Invitational in Long Beach.
Bryan Clay Invitational
Mason Mahacek continued competition in the decathlon with the discus throw, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meters. His best finish of the day was a first-place finish in the 1,500 in a time of 4:33.62, outpacing the second-place runner by four seconds. Mahacek saw a sixth-place finish in the discus, with a heave of 39.13 meters (128 feet, 4 inches). He fouled in the javelin and no-heighted in the pole vault.
Also in Azusa, Caleb Jarema competed in Group A of the open 5,000 meters and finished in sixth place in a career-best time of 14.28.51, while Luke Venhuizen was in Group B and ran a career-best 14:04.69 to finish sixth. Tom Brady participated in the invite 5,000 meters, completing the race in 13.36.82, good for 11th place and landed in top five in program history.
In the 800 meters, with Cole Johnson, Henry Johnson and Derrick Simmons representing the Wolverines. Cole Johnson took 32nd (1:49.29), Henry Johnson was 36th (career-best 1:49.38) and Simmons finished 56th (1:50.26).
Mt. SAC Relays
After competing in Long Beach, Eli Winter headed to Hilmer Lodge Stadium to compete in the discus throw alongside Zane Forist. Forist finished in 12th place with a throw of 50.55 meters (165 feet, 10 inches), while Winter took 20th with a throw of 46.14 meters (151 feet, 4 inches).
In the remaining field events, Henry Sheldon saw a third-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 4.95 meters (16 feet, 2.75 inches), while Luke Stowasser took seventh in the high jump, clearing 1.95 meters (6 feet, 4.75 inches). Jake Wall competed in the long jump, where he took 12th with a leap of 7.15 meters (23 feet, 5.5 inches), while Cole Sheldon competed in the collegiate C pole vault, taking seventh with a height of 4.75 meters (15 feet, 7 inches). On the track, Dubem Amene, Nick Butler-Simpson, Jack Juds, Lawrence Gilliam and Jacob Koerner ran an impressive 1,600-meter relay. Their time of 3:09.33 secured a second-place finish, less than one-tenth of a second behind Arkansas' winning group. Butler-Simpson, Gilliam and Juds also competed in the 400 meters, with Gilliam and Juds running career-best times. The sprinters finished in 38th (Gilliam, 48.38), 53rd (Juds, 49.49) and 57th (Butler-Simpson, 49.90).
Adam Wright was the sole Michigan hurdler at the meet, taking 34th in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 15.44.
Beach Invitational
Winter started the day strong for the Wolverines in Long Beach, competing in the hammer throw. His throw of 66.23 meters (217 feet, 3 inches) was a career-best and number four in program history.
On Saturday (April 15), the Wolverines will continue their California excursion ts, throws and jump groups at the Mt. SAC Relays at 10 a.m. PDT in Torrance. The throws group will take part in the Beach Invitational in Long Beach beginning at 11 a.m. PDT.
