AZUSA, Calif. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team opened a split meet week in California with day one of the Bryan Clay Invitational on Thursday (April 13). The meet is hosted by Azusa Pacific University at the Cougar Athletic Stadium in Azusa, California. Michigan had a combination of athletes to begin the week, with multiple members of the distance crew kicking off the competition, as well as Mason Mahacek in the decathlon.
Mahacek competed in running and throwing events only. The decathlete had no scores in the first two events of the day as he did not start in the 100-meter dash and fouled in the long jump. Mahacek saw success in the shot put, where his best throw was a heave of 11.90 meters (39 feet, 0.5 inches). He ended with an eighth-place finish in the event. The senior's best finish of the day was a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash. His 49.08 time put him closely behind Louisville's Paul Kallenberg, who took the event. This was also a career best for Mahacek, whose previous best in the distance was 49.31.
Jack Spamer and Colton Yesney competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase taking 65th and 125th, respectively. Spamer's time of 9:06.55 was competitive, securing his place in the upper half of the pack. Yesney ran a time of 9:32.32 in the event. James Gedris competed in the final event of the day, the 10,000-meters. This was the senior's first time competing at the distance -- where his time of 30:56.30 secured a 21st-place finish.
The Wolverines will be split across three meets today (Friday, April 14), with Michigan competing across the California coast. A mix of all event groups will compete at Bryan Clay Invitational, Mt. SAC Relays and Beach Invitational.
