CLEMSON, S.C. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team ended day one of the Clemson's Tiger Paw Invitational with two new career bests in the field events on Friday (Feb. 10) at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Complex.
The Wolverines' success was led by newcomers, with freshmen Zane Forist and Jake Wall setting career bests in the weight throw and long jump, respectively. Forist threw 18.78 meters (61 feet, 7.5 inches) to improve on his previous best by more than a foot, taking ninth in the weight throw. Wall lept 7.37 meters (24 feet, 2.25 inches) to finish 10th in the long jump.
Michigan's throwers enjoyed two top-10 finishes in the weight throw, with Forist's ninth-place finish accompanied by a seventh-place finish by junior Eli Winter, who threw 19.48 meters (63 feet, 11 inches) to hold his own in a competitive field. Forist and Winter were the only two Big Ten competitors of the group.
In the running events, Joshua Zeller advanced to the semifinals of the 60-meter hurdles. After a 10th-place finish in the preliminaries with a time of 7.83 seconds, he improved on his time to take ninth in the semifinals in 7.77, but Zeller was one spot short of qualifying for final.
The Wolverines will continue action Saturday (Feb. 11) at the Tiger Paw Invitational and Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invitational. Events for both meets are slated to start at 10 a.m. with Tom Brady and Zach Stewart kicking Michigan off in Boston with the 5,000-meter run and Berachiah Ajala and Tianhao Wei at Clemson in the triple jump.
