ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A weekend full of injuries proved to be too much to overcome for the 12th-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team on Saturday night (Nov. 18), as the Wolverines fell 5-3 to No. 18 Penn State at Yost Ice Arena.
Freshman forward Garrett Schifsky sent a shot off the end wall that wound up bouncing back into the crease, off the PSU netminder's skate, and across the goal line to give Michigan a 1-0 lead at 10:44. Schifsky's unexpected tally was assisted by Tyler Duke and Seamus Casey.
U-M's penalty killers took to the ice for the first time after Jacob Truscott was penalized for holding at 11:36. The Wolverines appeared to have the opportunity under control before a Penn State forward zipped around the cage and tapped home a backdoor pass to tie it at 1 with 6:38 left in the first period.
The Wolverines made their first shot of the middle period count when Dylan Duke fed a cross-ice pass in transition from the left flank over to the right where T.J. Hughes fired it top shelf to give Michigan a 2-1 lead at 1:10. Gavin Brindley earned the secondary helper on Hughes' seventh goal of the year.
The Nittany Lions tied the game at 2 at 8:33 when a skater broke free behind the defense for a spontaneous breakaway chance. The forward flipped a shot over Jake Barczewski's pad.
Nick Moldenhauer reclaimed the lead for Michigan 31 seconds later off an offensive-zone faceoff win. Nazar won the draw back to Casey at the right point, and the blue-liner fired a low shot on goal for Moldenhauer to redirect past the netminder to make it 3-2 at 9:04.
Pressure in front of Barczewski's net resulted in a game-tying redirection goal for PSU at 15:45.
The visitors then pulled ahead to make it 4-3 with 1:16 left in the period after a bouncing puck hopped past a sprawling Barczewski.
Penalties were plentiful in the final frame, as a combined eight infractions were called in the third. Neither side was able to capitalize with a power-play goal.
Michigan called its timeout with 2:47 remaining in regulation, still trailing 4-3, and when play resumed it pulled Barczewski in favor of an extra attacker.
After Michigan made a valiant effort with the net empty, a PSU forward scored an empty-netter to clinch a hat trick with 28.1 seconds left and ice a 5-3 win for the Nittany Lions.
Barczewski made 24 saves on 28 shots faced, as Penn State outshot Michigan 31-25.
Next up, the Wolverines make a non-conference road trip to St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 24-25) at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST on Friday night (Nov. 24) and 6 p.m. CST on Saturday (Nov. 25).
