
Bloom Named Big Ten Freshman of the Year; Windemuller, Hastie Earn All-Big Ten Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Lani Bloom of he University of Michigan women's cross country team was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and named to the All-Big Ten second team on Wednesday (Nov. 1) as part of the conference's announcement of postseason awards. Teammate Kayla Windemuller was named first team All-Big Ten for the second time and Samantha Hastie was named Michigan's Sportsmanship Award recipient.
Bloom made a strong impression in her conference championships debut, finishing 12th overall with a time of 21:35.9, earning her way to the awards stage as a part of the All-Big Ten second team. Bloom is 13th Big Ten Freshman of the Year in program history and the first since Sam Tran won the award in the 2020-21 season.
Windemuller paced the Maize and Blue at the Big Ten Championships, capturing seventh overall with a time of 21:14.2 to claim All-Big Ten first team honors. Windemuller has finished as the top Wolverine in all five races she has competed in this season and has yet to finish lower than 19th overall in any meet in 2023.
Hastie was honored with the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, an award given to athletes who have set themselves apart through hard work, sportsmanship, and honorable behavior. Hastie was the fifth Wolverine to cross the finish line at the Big Ten Championships with a time of 22:10.9. Hastie crossed the line as the final scorer to help the Wolverines to a third-place result at the conference championships.
Up next, Michigan will return to Madison, Wis., for the second straight meet when it takes part in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 10.
