ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team opened up the 2023 indoor season Saturday (Jan. 7) as it hosted the Wolverine Invitational at the U-M Indoor Track Building, which showcased the Wolverines distance runners.
The Maize and Blue made a strong showing in the men's mile, with personal bests from winner Anthony Hancock (4:09.79) James Gedris (fifth, 4:14.39). Michigan took the top seven places, with freshmen Ian Hill (second, 4:09.67), Caleb Jarema (third, 4:10.28), Luke Venhuizen (fourth, 4:12.62), Myles Liss-Riordan (sixth, 4:14.95) and Xander Black (seventh, 4:16.89) making their U-M debuts.
Michigan was particularly strong in the throwing events, sweeping the shot put with standout performances from freshmen Zane Forist and Cade Moran. In the weight throw, Forist finished fourth with his toss of 18.11m (59 feet, five inches), while Moran finished eighth with a distance of 16.18m (53 feet, one inch). Former Wolverine Joe Ellis won the event with this throw of 23.17m (76 feet, 0.25 inches).
In the pole vault, brothers Henry Sheldon and Cole Sheldon took the top two spots. Junior Henry cleared 4.90m (16 feet, 0.75 inches) while freshman Cole cleared 4.75m (15 feet, 7 inches).
Next Saturday (Jan. 14), the Wolverines will host their second straight event, this time the Michigan Invitational. Start time at the U-M Indoor Track Building is to be determined.
