EAST LANSING, Mich. -- It was a weekend of Wolverine dominance at the Spartan Invite from Friday through Sunday (Sept. 30-Oct. 2) as the University of Michigan men's tennis team sent both of its doubles pairs into the final and went unbeaten in singles -- aside from when U-M teammates faced off on Sunday (Oct. 2) -- to finish with a 14-2 mark.
A total of 16 doubles teams entered the tournament on Friday (Sept. 30). Each player then played a singles match based on the outcome of the doubles matches.
Andrew Fenty and Bjorn Swenson went undefeated at the tournament, as both a duo and in singles play, each collecting eight wins apiece. Fenty and Swenson kicked off play with a 6-1 doubles win over a pair from Indiana, knocked off a Notre Dame team 6-0 and took down Illinois in the semifinals to line up an all-Wolverine final. On the next court, Will Cooksey and Patorn Hanchaikul posted a 6-0 win over Notre Dame in the first round, put up a 6-1 score on Illinois in the second and bested a duo from Western Michigan 6-2 in the semifinals. Fenty and Swenson walked away with the final victory, defeating Cooksey and Hanchaikul 6-4.
Fenty, ranked No. 42 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, went 4-0 in singles with two-set wins over Sam Landau (Indiana), Brian Bilsey (Notre Dame), Kenta Miyoshi (Illinois) and teammate Cooksey.
In Swenson's first appearance in singles play, he went 4-0 -- all in straight-set matches. He topped Jagger Saylor (Indiana), Noah Becker (Notre Dame), Mathis Debru (Illinois) and teammate Hanchaikul.
Cooksey won his first three singles matches before facing Fenty. He won all in two sets and took two second-set tie breakers. Hanchaikul easily dispatched his first opponent from Notre Dame before taking down his next two foes in 10-point tiebreakers.
Michigan continues play Monday through Sunday (Oct. 3-9) at the ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
