NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- With a final-round tally of 68 (-2) by sophomore Hunter Thomson and a career-low 70 (E) from senior Pier-Francesco De Col, the University of Michigan men's golf team posted a 354 total Sunday (Sept. 25) to card a 1,069 6-count-5 Macdonald Cup total to record its second straight top-five team finish to open the season.
Returning to New Haven for Yale's home event after a runner-up finish last year, junior Jude Kim paced the first round with his career-low-tying 67 (-3). His tally along with junior Will Anderson's even-par 70 and Thomson's 71, the Maize and Blue opened with a 355 first-round tally using the tournament's 6-count-5 format.
Positioned fourth, U-M headed straight into its second 18 of Saturday's opening day and used a 70 from Thomson, a 71 from Kim and a pair of 72s from Anderson and De Col to etch a 360 to end the first day with a 715 36-hole total and a sixth position on the leaderboard.
Getting off to a solid start in the shotgun-formatted final round, Thomson used three birdies to record his first sub-70 round of the season with a 68 (-2). With a birdie erasing his only bogey on the round, De Col followed with 16 pars to record a career-best 70 (E), while Anderson also closed with a 70. With the trio's tally, the Wolverines produced their event-best 354 team total to move up a spot and finish fifth.
With his seventh sub-par 54-hole total, Thomson's 209 (71-70-68, -1) was good for an eighth-place finish to give him back-to-back top 10s to open the season. After winning Yale's event last season, Anderson returned and tied for 18th at 212 (70-72-70), while De Col's final round 70 helped him to a career-low 216 (71-72-70) and a tie for 25th.
Returning to Ann Arbor, U-M will train for the next few weeks before heading to Jersey City, N.J., for the Georgetown Intercollegiate, the Hoyas' two-day, 54-hole event at Liberty National.
