ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In its final tuneup ahead of the Big Ten Championships next weekend, the University of Michigan men's track and field team posted five wins on Saturday (May 7) as it hosted the Len Paddock Open at the U-M Outdoor Track and Field Stadium.
Sharpening their speed with a dip down to 800 meters in preparation for a potential run at the Big Ten 1,500 meters title, All-American Tom Dodd got the win and All-American Nick Foster was runner-up in a strong field.
Dodd pulled away and no one could catch him as he crossed the line in a career-best 1:48.18, followed by Foster in 1:49.93 as he edged out professional Hobbs Kessler at the finish.
The performance moved Dodd all the way up to No. 7 in school history, giving the Wolverines three active men in the top 10. No. 6 Miles Brown and No. 9 Cole Johnson served as pacemakers in the race.
At the 1,500-meter distance later in the meet, Anthony DeKraker ran a career-best 3:44.80 to win a battle to the line with teammate Oli Raimond (3:45.35) by just over half a second.
Headlining the sprints was double-winner Ryan McCloskey. He opened his afternoon with a victory at 100 meters in 10.60 (+2.0m/s), and followed it up with a 21.30 (+1.8m/s) time to claim the 200 meters.
For the second year in a row, Job Mayhue took the win in the 110-meter hurdles, this time coming from behind late in the race to take it by .01 of a second. With an aiding tailwind, Mayhue just edged out Eastern Michigan's Almighty Williamson at the line in 13.89 (+3.1m/s).
Up next for the Wolverines are the Big Ten Championships on May 13-15, to be held in Minneapolis, Minn., at the University of Minnesota.
