DURHAM, N.C. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team got a stellar 2022 outdoor debut from multiple-time All-American distance runner Tom Dodd to lead the Wolverines at the Duke Invitational on Friday (April 8).
Dodd ran from the front of the fastest section of the invitational 1,500 meters right from the start, pushing the pace and closing hard to run a 3:39.86 for fourth place. In what was his first individual race for the Wolverines since last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships, Dodd came within 0.26 of a second of his career best. In school history, only multiple-time Olympians Kevin Sullivan and Nick Willis have run faster.
The performance, equivalent to a 3:57.45 mile, all but assures him a spot at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds next month, where the top 48 individuals per event qualify to compete in the opening rounds of the national meet.
Michigan also went 1-2 in the unseeded section of the event as Will Landowne and Christian Hubaker ran career-best 3:44.58 and 3:46.97 efforts, respectively. Landowne, as well as Oli Raimond and his career-best 3:44.33 for 15th in the invitational portion of the 1,500 meters, will both be on the bubble for NCAA East Prelims qualifying.
In the steeplechase, both Joost Plaetinck and Jack Spamer broke the nine-minute barrier with fifth- and sixth-place efforts in 8:56.07 and 8:57.73, respectively. Like Landowne and Raimond, they both are currently on the projected East Prelims qualifying bubble.
Michigan got a pair of top-10 finishes in the field with career-best performances from Cassidy Henshaw in the long jump and Aiden Felty in the shot put.
Henshaw leapt 7.15m (23-5.5, +0.0m/s) in the first round of the second of three flights, which held up for seventh place overall through the rest of the competition. Felty closed out his six rounds with a career-best 16.74m (54-11) heave to move to sixth.
Saturday's final day of competition begins at 10 a.m. with field events. Action on the track begins at noon and will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra digital platform.
