DES MOINES, Iowa -- Just as they have all year long, the University of Michigan men's track and field team's All-Americans came through on the big stage of the prestigious Drake Relays on Friday (April 29) to lead the Wolverines on the second of three days of competition.
The Wolverines finished runner-up in the infrequently contested 4x800-meter relay, clocking 7:18.78 to come within a second of the 7:17.84 school record that has stood since 1986.
Michigan got a solid 1:51.78 opening leg from Thomas Shilgalis to finish the first leg in fifth place, and All-American Miles Brown took the Wolverines to the front of the pack with a 1:49.82 carry. After emerging from the exchange zone in third, Henry Johnson clocked 1:49.44 to move Michigan up to second place for All-American Cole Johnson's anchor leg.
Johnson's anchor was the fastest split of anyone in the race as he clocked 1:47.75 to hold off Iowa by just over a quarter of a second.
All-Americans accounted for two more top-three finishes during the evening session, as Nick Foster was third at 1,500 meters and Dubem Amene took third at 400 meters.
Foster clocked a career-best 3:40.29 in his race, and was rewarded for an aggressive approach. The indoor relay All-American stuck with the leaders when they made a move with a lap to go, and held on to move up to No. 4 in school history.
His time will likely stand up as a qualifying mark for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds next month, reserved for the top-48 in the East Region who choose to compete in each event. The East Prelims serve as opening rounds for the national meet.
Amene posted a strong 46.56 effort for third place at 400 meters in difficult conditions. The indoor Big Ten silver medalist was one of only three men in the field to crack the 47-second barrier in the competition.
Earlier in the day and running in less-than-ideal conditions -- a 20 mile-per-hour crosswind with gusts in the area measured to near 50 miles per hour -- indoor All-American Joshua Zeller still managed a 14.13 (-2.5m/s) run for the fastest time of anyone in the 110-meter hurdles preliminary round. He pulled away late from conference rivals Gratt Reed and Grant Conway of Iowa to win by .15 of a second.
The result assured him a spot in Saturday's 12:50 p.m. CT final on CBS Sports Network, which will feature five other Big Ten contenders.
He was nearly joined in that field by teammate Job Mayhue, who came within .01 of Nebraska's Darius Luff, the Big Ten's second-fastest man this year behind Zeller. Though Luff eased up and Mayhue stretched at the line, that .01 was ultimately the difference in Mayhue missing the eight-man final as he finished ninth overall in 14.61 (-2.8m/s).
Michigan also got a top-10 finish in finals action during the early session as Henry Johnson took seventh at 800 meters in 1:51.58.
The final day at Drake will begin at 12:10 p.m. CT, with Michigan entries in the distance medley, sprint medley, 4x100 and 4x400 relays, as well as select individual finals.
