ORLANDO, Fla. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team wrapped up its spring break trip with a 7-0 shutout of the University of Central Florida on Saturday (March 5) to cap the week. The Wolverines began the week with an upset over No. 1 TCU on its home court.
No. 14-ranked pair Andrew Fenty and Nino Ehrenschneider took a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles, after jumping out to a 4-0 lead. The Knights challenged winning the next three points to make it a 4-3 match, but Fenty/Ehrenschneider grabbed two of the final three points. Ondrej Styler and Gavin Young came up short at No. 1 doubles to No. 30-ranked Lleyton Cronje/Bogdan Pavel. The duo, playing in their second match in the No. 1 position, fell behind 4-1 but made it a 5-5 match. UCF grabbed the final two points for the 7-5 decision and put the doubles match on the shoulders of Nick Beaty and Patrick Maloney at No. 3. They exchanged points back and forth throughout the match but holding 5-5 they claimed the final two to take it 7-5, and put Michigan on the board 1-0.
Fresh off of clinching the win over TCU, Styler was moved to No. 1 singles and answered the call as he put Michigan up 2-0 quickly with 6-3, 6-1 wins over Cronje.
Beaty claimed his 10th singles win and fourth straight, topping Cooper White by matching 6-3 sets.
Young clinched the match at No. 5 singles with 6-3, 7-5 scores over JC Roddick.
Maloney followed at No. 4 singles with 6-1, 7-6 (4) score over Alan Rubio, his 10th win over the year and improves to 6-1 in dual play.
Fenty rallied to take down No. 55 Trey Hilderbrand after dropping the first 6-4, won the next two 6-3, 6-2, his third straight win.
No. 75 Jacob Bickersteth put the final touches on the match -- a 10-3 third-set tiebreaker after splitting the first two with Pavel 6-7 (2), 6-3.
