CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Joshua Zeller was exceptional and historic in his 2022 individual outdoor debut as he clocked a nearly technically flawless 13.42 (+1.6m/s) to win the 110-meter hurdles and take the global lead in the event this year, taking down a nearly four-decade school record in the process.
The fastest time run under all wind conditions in school history had been 13.52 (+4.2m/s) by Thomas Wilcher in 1985, with 13.57 having stood as the wind-legal school record by Wilcher (+0.0m/s) in 1986 and two-time Olympian Jeff Porter (+1.8m/s) in 2007.
Not missing a beat from an indoor season in which he won the Big Ten title and advanced to the NCAA Indoor Championships, Zeller immediately reestablished himself as an outdoor national contender. He did not make contact with a single barrier as he crossed the line in a time that put him just 0.05 of a second outside the all-time collegiate top-25 and just 0.1 shy of the 2022 World Championships qualifying standard.
In all of British history, Zeller now ranks tied for No. 12.
Fellow 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships competitors and individual second-team All-Americans Dubem Amene and Miles Brown also posted strong finishes in their individual outdoor debuts.
Amene won his section of the 200 meters in a career-best 21.20 (+0.4m/s) to finish third overall and move to a share of No. 10 in school history with Omar Davidson. Zeller would double back to join him with another career-best of his own at 21.77 for eighth overall.
Brown posted a runner-up finish at 800 meters in 1:49.33. Just over two seconds off his indoor school record from earlier this winter, the true freshman put himself on the bubble of NCAA East Prelims qualification, with plenty of time remaining this spring to solidify his outlook.
Joining Zeller as a winner for the Wolverines was Cassidy Henshaw, who took the high jump title with an outdoor career-best 2.11m (6-11) clearance.
The Wolverines closed out the meet with one last victory as the quartet of Lawrence Gilliam, Jacob Koerner, Brown and Amene combined to run 3:08.62 to claim the 4x400 relay. Amene trailed by over a second behind Miami when he got the stick for the anchor leg, but used a 45.46 split to beat the Hurricanes to the line by 0.27 of a second.
The time puts the Wolverines in contention to return to the NCAA East Prelims, from which they have advanced to nationals in their last two opportunities in 2019 and 2021.
