RALEIGH, N.C. -- On the second day of competition at the NC State Raleigh Relays on Friday (March 25), the University of Michigan men's track and field team got a strong 2022 outdoor debut from returning All-American Christian Hubaker.
Running in the fastest section of his signature 3,000-meter steeplechase event, Hubaker clocked 8:48.64 for seventh overall. The time is the fastest season-opener of his career by nearly six seconds, and is the second-fastest time ever run by a Wolverine in the month of March. Only eventual Olympic bronze medalist Brian Diemer ran faster in March with a 8:37.96 in 1982.
The time is likely fast enough to qualify him for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, to which the top 48 individuals in each event in the NCAA East Region qualify for the chance to earn a berth to nationals.
Austin Remick and Jack Spamer both ran near-identical 9:04.26 and 9:04.87 times for 29th and 31st, respectively. Both men had the best debuts of their careers by more than two seconds and nearly 10 seconds, respectively.
In the only other event of the night, Zachary Stewart was the fastest Wolverine at 10,000 meters with a 30:01.91 for 69th.
