Wolverine Bites
• Michigan is in search of its 12th Big Ten Championships title in school history and its first since 1973, when the Wolverines sent two individuals to the winner's podium and earned 76 points to beat runner-up Iowa by seven points. U-M owns the fourth-most conference team titles in Big Ten history with 11.
• With 128 conference individual titles in program history (coming from 86 different wrestlers), the Wolverines boast the second most of any Big Ten school behind Iowa with 207. U-M has claimed at least one champion in 11 of the last 17 seasons. Myles Amine captured the 197-pound title last season with a 7-3 decision over Nebraska's Eric Schultz in the final.
• Graduate students Stevan Micic and Nick Suriano are also previous Big Ten champions in the Wolverine starting lineup. Micic captured the 133-pound conference title in 2018, while Suriano won at the same weight while representing Rutgers in 2019. Graduate student Patrick Brucki also claimed a conference title while at Princeton, winning the 2019 EIWA crown at 197 pounds.
• Brucki is the only member of the Wolverine starting lineup without Big Ten Championships experience, though he placed top five in all three of his EIWA appearances while at Princeton. Myles Amine and Logan Massa will both make their fifth trip at the Big Ten tournament. Amine placed top three in all four previous appearances, including his 197-pound title last season and two runner-up efforts at 174 pounds. Massa has always placed fifth or better, including a second-place finish at 165 pounds in 2017.
• Michigan placed fourth at the 2021 Big Ten Championships with 92 points. Michigan had eight total placewinners, most notably Myles Amine's first-place finish at 197 pounds and Mason Parris' runner-up effort at heavyweight, while Cameron Amine took third at 165 pounds and Logan Massa placed fourth at 174.
• The Wolverines earned top-five Big Ten seeds at eight weights, most notably Suriano, who earned the top seed at 125 pounds, and Massa and Myles Amine, who garnered No. 2 seeds at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. U-M's other top-five seeds are sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin (5th, 133), senior/junior Will Lewan (3rd, 157), junior/sophomore Cameron Amine (4th, 165), Brucki (5th, 197) and Parris (4th, Hwt). All seeds will be finalized at Friday's coaches meeting.
• The Wolverines wrapped their Big Ten dual slate with a 7-1 record to finish tied with Iowa for second in the conference standings. Michigan's lone defeat came to No. 1 Penn State, which captured the dual-meet title with a perfect 8-0 Big Ten record. Michigan has posted a stellar 25-7 Big Ten dual record under fourth-year head coach Sean Bormet.
• Top-ranked Suriano enters the postseason as U-M's lone unbeaten wrestler with an 8-0 record at 125 pounds. He has earned bonus points in seven of his eight matches with a fall, two technical falls and four major decisions, and boasts a pair of top-10 wins, defeating Penn State's No. 7 Drew Hildebrandt (2-1, Jan. 21) and Minnesota's No. 9 Patrick McKee (14-6, Jan. 28). Suriano, who joined the Wolverine program as a grad transfer this semester, was the 2019 Big Ten and NCAA champion at 133 pounds while at Rutgers.
• Massa has surged to No. 2 in the nation at 174 pounds with a 9-1 record. His only loss came, 3-2, to Penn State's top-ranked and defending NCAA champion Carter Starocci on Jan. 21. He boasts a pair of top-10 wins with decisions over Nebraska's No. 5 Mikey Labriola (4-1, Feb. 4) and Ohio State's No. 7 Ethan Smith (10-5, Jan. 14). Massa is 9-1 on the season with two falls, two technical falls and a major decision.
• Myles Amine is also ranked No. 2 nationally at 184 pounds with a 14-1 record and five ranked wins this season, most notably top-10 decisions against Nebraska's No. 9 Taylor Venz (8-2), Northern Illinois' No. 7 Brit Wilson (7-0) and Ohio State's No. 7 Kaleb Romero (3-1 SV). His lone loss came, 3-1, to No. 1 and defending NCAA champion Aaron Brooks from Penn State.
• Two Wolverines have earned their 100th collegiate win over second-semester dual action. Massa is now 108-25 after earning his 100th win with his first-period fall against Pitt's Hunter Kernan (2:18) in his season dual debut (Jan. 9), while graduate student Kanen Storr defeated Michigan State's Peyton Omania, 5-2, on Feb. 13, and is now 100-35 in his career. Last season, Myles Amine became the 37th Wolverine wrestler to reach 100 wins and now boasts a 116-22 record. Two more Wolverines are bearing down on the 100-win milestone. Micic owns a 99-18 record, while Brucki, who spent his first three seasons at Princeton, is now 97-21 in his collegiate career.
