LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team leads the team race after the first day of action at the Big Ten Conference Championships on Saturday (March 5) at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The Wolverines put five in the championship finals and will place all 10 wrestlers. U-M boasts 116 points -- 4.5 points ahead of second-place Penn State.
The Wolverines went 5-for-8 in the semifinal round and are tied with Penn State for the most finalists. Graduate students Nick Suriano, Logan Massa and Myles Amine will all make repeat appearances in the championship round at 125, 174 and 184 pounds, respectively -- Suriano and Amine are previous champions -- while senior/junior Will Lewan and junior/sophomore Cameron Amine advanced to the finals for the first time at 157 and 165 pounds.
Suriano, the No. 1 seed and No. 1-ranked wrestler nationally at 125 pounds, made quick work of his semifinal opponent, scoring two takedowns before pinning Purdue's Devin Schroeder with a leg turk at the 2:39 mark. Suriano also earned bonus in his quarterfinal bout, using five takedowns and a late four-point near fall to cruise to an 18-6 major decision over Rutgers' Dylan Shawver.
Lewan and Amine gutted out back-to-back overtime decisions in the semifinals. Lewan, ranked 10th at 157 pounds, finished on a leg attack just seconds into the sudden-victory frame to defeat Penn State's 13th-ranked Brady Berge, 3-1. Lewan also earned a ranked win in the quarterfinals, defeating Michigan State's No. 16 Chase Saldate, 3-1, with a single leg out a flurry in the final 10 seconds of the third period.
Cameron Amine, ranked ninth at 165 pounds, edged Ohio State's top-seeded and fourth-ranked Carson Kharchla, 3-1, in the semifinal, chasing a single leg off a go behind and finishing the takedown with a big mat return to end the bout midway through the extra frame. Amine earned bonus with an 11-1 major decision over Michigan State's Caleb Fish in the quarterfinals, breaking it open early with a four-point whipover before adding two takedowns and 1:17 in riding-time advantage.
Massa, ranked second at 174 pounds, rallied back from an initial deficit to beat Nebraska's third-ranked Mikey Labriola, 6-5, in the semifinals -- and for the second time this season after falling to the Husker at Big Tens last year. Massa gave up an early double leg then controlled the entirety of the action for the rest of the bout, finishing on a single legs in the second and third periods to secure the decision.
Myles Amine, ranked second at 184 pounds, made it four semifinal wins in a row for the Wolverines with a 4-2 decision over Ohio State's sixth-ranked Kaleb Romero. After a scoreless first period, Amine finished on a single leg in the second and rode for the bulk of the third to accumulate 1:44 in time advantage. Amine captured the Big Ten title last season at 197 pounds.
Sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin, graduate student Patrick Brucki and senior Mason Parris dropped their semifinal bouts -- all to top-three opponents, including a pair of No. 1s.
Ragusin, ranked eighth at 133 pounds, fell to Penn State's top-ranked Roman Bravo-Young, 4-0, on a late first-period takedown and second-period rideout in the semifinals. The Wolverine avenged a dual loss in the morning quarterfinal round, beating Michigan State's seventh-ranked Rayvon Foley, 3-1, behind a wild scramble takedown and rideout in the first period.
Brucki, ranked 11th at 197 pounds, also scored an upset in the quarterfinals with a 3-1 decision against Iowa's fourth-ranked Jacob Warner on a late first-period takedown. He fell to Nebraska's third-ranked Eric Schultz, 3-2, in the semifinals with a counter takedown in the second. Brucki earned a locked-hands point but not an escape in the second, tying the score at 2-2, but Schultz used his escape in the third to provide the difference.
Parris, ranked fourth at heavyweight, fell to Minnesota's top-ranked Gable Steveson, 14-6, in the semifinals -- his third Big Ten tournament loss to the Gopher wrestler. Parris rallied from an initial deficit to beat Northwestern's 10th-ranked Lucas Davison, 7-2, in the quarterfinals. He scored takedowns late in the first and second periods and rode out the third period to accumulate 1:12 in time advantage. Parris also earned bonus with a dominant 18-3 technical fall over Michigan State's Brad Wilton in the first round, scoring four takedowns, a reversal and six back points to end the bout at the 5:15 mark.
Graduate students Stevan Micic and Kanen Storr bounced back from early losses to reach the medal round at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively. Micic earned an NCAA automatic qualifying bid with a 4-3 decision over Northwestern's Frankie Tal Shahar to advance to the consolation semifinals. He scored on a duck under and rode out the first period and, after the Wildcat scored on a takedown on his own in the third, escaped and held on for the decision win.
Storr went 2-2 on the day to move into tomorrow's seventh-place match, where he'll need a win to lock up the final NCAA automatic spot at 149 pounds. The Wolverine captain scored an upset in the wrestlebacks with an 8-7 decision over Northwestern's 11th-ranked Yahya Thomas. The wrestlers traded takedowns in the first before Storr took a late lead with a low double in the third. He added a caution and earned 1:07 in riding-time advantage to ice it.
Michigan will wrap up action at the Big Ten Championships tomorrow (Sunday, March 6) at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Neb. The third session is slated to begin at 11 a.m. CST, while the finals will start at 3:30 p.m. CST and will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
