ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Graduate student LHP Meghan Beaubien tossed a two-hit shutout and the No. 21-ranked University of Michigan softball team put up multiple runs in three innings to beat Toledo, 8-0 in five, on Tuesday evening (March 15) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
Beaubien (3-4) fanned nine batters for the second-straight contest and registered her second complete-game shutout of the season while giving up just two hits and a walk through five innings. She struck out the side in the first and fourth frames and did not allow a Rocket base runner to reach scoring position.
Senior catcher Hannah Carson went 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI to pace the offensive effort, while sophomore second baseman Sierra Kersten and freshman outfielder Ellie Sieler posted two hits apiece. Sieler, who came off the bench, ended the game with a flared RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.
Michigan struck quickly in the first inning with senior outfielder Lexie Blair reaching on a leadoff single and scoring as part of Carson's two-run single to the left center gap. U-M added another in the opening frame on a dropped liner to left field, which allowed Carson to score from first base.
Carson keyed a two-run third inning with a low screamer past the Toledo second baseman for an RBI double and again scored when Kersten drove a two-out single to the right field wall.
The Wolverines used five hits to tack on three more in the fifth and secure their run-rule margin. Graduate student Kristina Burkhardt extended her hit streak to 11 straight games with a leadoff double -- her 14th two-bagger this season -- and scored when junior first baseman Lauren Esman punched a single through the right side. Kersten drove in another on a RBI single to right before Sieler's game-ending looper to the left center gap.
Michigan (16-6) will host Oakland at 4 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday, March 16) at Alumni Field. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office.
