WOLVERINE BITES
• Michigan will honor 12 senior wrestlers prior to its Michigan State dual meet on Sunday: graduate students Myles Amine, Patrick Brucki, J.T. Correll, Stevan Micic, Logan Massa, Drew Mattin, Kanen Storr and Nick Suriano; fifth-year seniors Jelani Embree and Zachery Nemec; senior/junior Nick Freeman; and graduate student manager Justin Moore. The large class has combined for one NCAA title, 13 All-America citations and four conference titles over their collegiate careers.
• After the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted several consecutive-year wrestling matchups last season, including a few Ivy League cases that went back more than a century, the Michigan-Michigan State rivalry is now the longest active series at 76 consecutive years -- since 1946. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, who wrestle multiple times a season, list one spot behind at 75 consecutive years.
• The Wolverines stand in third place in the Big Ten standings with a 5-1 conference record and two duals remaining. Michigan's lone defeat came to No. 1 Penn State, which sealed the dual-meet title with a perfect 8-0 Big Ten record. Iowa sits in second with a 6-1 mark and one dual to go. Michigan owns a stellar 23-7 Big Ten dual record under fourth-year head coach Sean Bormet.
• Michigan has scored bonus points in nearly half of its dual-meet wins this season, with 35 bonus wins out of 73 total wins. U-M boasted a season-best seven bonus wins against Maryland (Jan. 30). Among its bonus wins, Michigan owns seven falls, six technical falls and 19 major decisions in dual action this season.
• Senior/junior Will Lewan scored his biggest win of the season with a 3-1 sudden-victory decision over Nebraska's fifth-ranked Peyton Robb at 157 pounds last Friday (Feb. 4). The aggressor for the bulk of the match, Lewan fended off a low single early in the overtime period before countering with a go-behind late for the winning takedown. Lewan is 11-3 on the season and a near-perfect 7-1 in dual competition.
• Graduate student Logan Massa also scored a mild upset against Nebraska with a 4-1 decision over fifth-ranked Mikey Labriola at 174 pounds. Massa rode for most of the second period to accumulate more than 90 seconds riding time then iced the bout with a counter takedown in the final 10 seconds of the third. It was his second top-10 win in six bouts -- he also rallied to beat Ohio State's seventh-ranked Ethan Smith 10-5 on Jan. 14 -- and it avenged an 11-3 major decision defeat to Labriola last season.
• Massa is now 105-25 over his collegiate career and became the 38th Michigan wrestler to achieve the 100-win milestone with his first-period fall against Pitt's Hunter Kernan (2:18) in his season dual debut (Jan. 9). Two more Wolverines are bearing down on the 100-win milestone. Stevan Micic owns a 96-17 record, while Brucki, who spent his first three seasons at Princeton, is now 95-21 in his collegiate career. Last season, Myles Amine became the 37th Wolverine wrestler to reach 100 wins and now boasts a 113-22 record.
• Myles Amine owns three top-10 wins this season, most recently earning an 8-2 decision over Nebraska's No. 9 Taylor Venz with two takedowns, a reversal and 2:06 in riding time. Amine also defeated two No. 7 wrestlers in Northern Illinois' No. 7 Brit Wilson (7-0) and Ohio State's Kaleb Romero (3-1 SV) -- and, just outside the top-10, Maryland's No. 11 Kyle Cochran (6-2). Amine is 10-1 on the season; his lone loss came, 3-1, to No. 1 and defending NCAA champion Aaron Brooks from Penn State.
• Nick Suriano is 6-0 on the season with five bonus wins at 125 pounds. He boasts a pair of top-10 wins, defeating Penn State's seventh-ranked Drew Hildebrandt (2-1, Jan. 21) and Minnesota's ninth-ranked Patrick McKee (14-6, Jan. 28). Suriano, who joined the Wolverine program as a grad transfer this semester, was the 2019 NCAA champion at 133 pounds while at Rutgers.
• Michigan crowned three champions at the Edinboro Open last Sunday (Feb. 6). Freshman Chance Lamer captured the 149-pound title -- he previously won the MSU Open at 141 pounds last semester -- while sophomore/freshman Joseph Walker and Jaden Bullock won at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. The Wolverines boasted eight total placewinners at the event.
