BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team claimed nine bouts, earning bonus points in four, to cruise to a 37-3 win in its final Big Ten Conference road dual on Friday night (Feb. 11) at Wilkinson Hall.
The Wolverines (10-1, 6-1 Big Ten) earned falls from graduate student Nick Suriano and senior Mason Parris in the first and last bouts at 125 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, to end the dual much like it began.
It was Suriano's first pin of the season -- though he improved to 7-0 with six total bonus wins -- with a second-period stick of Jacob Moran. Suriano, ranked No. 1 nationally at 125 pounds, scored four takedowns -- two apiece in the first and second frames -- and transitioned from a blast double to a leg turk midway through the second, earning four swipes before adjusting to secure the fall at the 4:37 mark.
Parris, ranked third nationally at heavyweight, earned his second pin of the season over the Hoosiers' Jacob Bullock -- and fourth overall -- with an arm bar at 2:25. Parris finished on his fireman's dump in the opening 10 seconds, used the arm bar for a four count then settled in to secure the fall. He improved to 11-2 on the season with nine bonus wins.
The Wolverines also earned big points from back-to-back technical falls from graduate students Logan Massa and Myles Amine at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. Massa, ranked fifth, scored on seven takedowns and earned four stall points en route to a 20-5 win against Nick South. Massa finished on a go behind in the final 15 seconds of the third and finished the bout on top to earn the tech after riding time. Amine, ranked second, rolled to a 21-3 win against Sean Grim with five takedowns and 10 back points off three separate leg turks, including one for four at the second-period buzzer to end the match.
Sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin claimed the dual's marquee match with a 6-3 decision over 10th-ranked Brock Hudkins at 133 pounds. Ragusin, ranked seventh, scored takedowns early and late in the bout to control throughout, finishing on a shuck in the first period and an ankle pick off a go-behind attempt to secure riding time and ice it late. It was his second top-10 win of the season.
Graduate student Stevan Micic got back in the win column with a 10-5 decision over Cayden Rooks at 141 pounds. Micic, ranked 17th, finished on four takedowns and -- despite giving up a late locked-hands point in a scramble -- rode for 2:14. Micic added another win, via second-period fall, against Noah Gochberg.
Senior/junior Will Lewan and sophomore/freshman Cameron Amine bookended the intermission break with 3-2 decisions at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively. Lewan, ranked ninth, transitioned a go behind to a single-leg takedown in the second to defeat Derek Gilcher, while 14th-ranked Amine used a first-period double leg to edge Kasper McIntosh.
Graduate student Patrick Brucki, ranked 11th at 197 pounds, claimed a gritty 3-1 overtime decision against Nick Willham to also get back into the win column. Brucki was the aggressor throughout, drawing an early first-period stall warning, and nearly finished on a low single in the third before initiating two scrambles in overtime, coming out on top of the latter to end the bout midway through the sudden-victory frame.
Michigan will wrap up its Big Ten dual slate on Sunday (Feb. 13) when it hosts in-state rival and No. 14-ranked Michigan State at noon at Cliff Keen Arena. The dual will be streamed live on B1G+.
