Wolverines Hang On Against Iowa for Eighth Straight Win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team led by as many as 25 points and withstood a 36-point fourth quarter from Iowa, running its winning streak to eight behind a 98-90 win over the Hawkeyes on Sunday evening (Feb. 6) at Crisler Center.
Naz Hillmon tied the school record for double-doubles in a career, going for 26 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two blocks in 35 minutes of action. Freshman Laila Phelia had a career-best 24 points to go with four rebounds and three assists. Maddie Nolan turned in 17 points and five boards, hitting four triples on the contest. Emily Kiser rounded out Michigan's double-figure scorers with 10 points and seven boards.
U-M shot 53.1 percent (34-for-64) from the field and held a 44-27 advantage on the glass. Iowa's Caitlin Clark turned in a career-best 46 points, scoring 25 of those points in the fourth quarter as U-M held off the Iowa charge.
Michigan raced out to a 7-2 lead less than three minutes in behind buckets from Hillmon and Phelia, along with a triple from Rauch.
U-M doubled up the Hawkeyes, 14-7, on a Cameron Williams hook shot in the lane with 5:22 left in the first quarter. Michigan led 25-15 after 10 minutes, getting a Nolan triple on its final trip down the court for the 10-point lead.
Michigan led by as many as 17 points in the second quarter, hitting the halftime break with a 48-36 lead behind 16 first-half points from Hillmon. U-M also held a 23-10 advantage on the glass, getting 12 second-chance points to Iowa's zero in the first 20 minutes.
U-M started the third quarter on an 18-6 run, including eight straight to end it as Nolan hit back-to-back triples to force an Iowa timeout with 3:15 remaining in the third as Michigan's lead grew to 66-41.
Iowa mounted a small run in the remaining time, but Hillmon scored on a putback to end the third quarter, giving Michigan a 70-54 lead after 30 minutes.
Iowa opened the fourth on an 8-4 run, forcing a Michigan timeout with 6:53 remaining and its lead down to 12, 74-62.
After Iowa cut the Michigan lead to single digits, 78-69, with 4:52 left, Hillmon countered with a three-point play just 20 seconds later to push the lead back to 12.
Iowa would not go away, eventually getting within five points with 1:14 to go. Amy Dilk hit a pair of free throws with 1:10 remaining, nudging Michigan's lead back to seven. After Iowa converted two-of-three free throws the next trip down, Dilk split a pair at the line for a 94-88 lead with 1:01 on the clock.
Michigan got stops the next two times down the floor, and Nolan went 3-for-4 at the line to put the game on ice for the Wolverines.
U-M is back in action on Thursday (Feb. 10), traveling to Michigan State to face the Spartans in East Lansing. The game is set for 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
