LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team rallied at the upperweights and sealed it at the lowerweights to earn a 20-13 comeback win against No. 8 Nebraska on Friday night (Feb. 4) at the Cornhuskers' Devaney Center.
U-M earned top-10 wins from senior/junior Will Lewan (157 pounds) and graduate students Logan Massa (174) and Myles Amine (184) to give the Wolverines their first lead entering intermission -- the dual started at 149 pounds -- while senior heavyweight Mason Parris added a ranked win after the break to put Michigan (9-1, 5-1 Big Ten) ahead for good with three bouts remaining.
Lewan, ranked 13th at 157 pounds, used an overtime takedown to edge fifth-ranked Peyton Robb 3-1 and pick up his biggest win of the season to date. Lewan scrambled out of a deep low single shot and again on a second effort on the edge early in the sudden-victory frame -- a no-call upheld after a Nebraska challenge -- then countered a Robb double-leg attempt from distance, snapping and going behind for the winning takedown with 37 seconds left in the extra period.
Massa, ranked sixth, earned a gritty 4-1 decision over fifth-ranked Mikey Labriola at 174 pounds to avenge a pair of losses to the Cornhusker last season. After a scoreless first period, Massa used a big second-period ride to accumulate more than 90 seconds of time advantage then iced the bout with a counter takedown on the edge in the final 10 seconds of the third. It was Massa's second top-10 in six matches; he improved to 6-1 on the season.
Amine, ranked second at 184 pounds, also benefited from a tough ride in an 8-2 decision over ninth-ranked Taylor Venz. Amine, who improved to 11-1 with four ranked wins, scored off a counter scramble in the first and a reversal in the second and rode out periods before icing it with a go-behind and rideout in the third to finish with 2:06 in riding-time advantage.
Nebraska (5-3, 2-3 Big Ten) retook the lead with a decision win at 197 pounds before Parris stole it back with a 4-1 decision over 12th-ranked Christian Lance at heavyweight -- and Michigan did not trail again. Parris, ranked third, pushed the pace early but could not finish on a multiple leg attacks. As with Massa and Amine, he took control with the ride in the third period, securing more than a minute -- he finished with 1:43 -- then icing the match with a go behind late.
Fifth-year senior Jack Medley poured on the points at 125 pounds, rolling to a 23-8 technical fall over Jeremiah Reno to collect some key bonus points -- after Nebraska earned bonus in the first bout of the dual. Medley scored on nine takedowns -- three per period -- and added two back points off a first-period fireman's dump. He ended the bout with a go behind at 6:11.
Sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin, ranked eighth at 133 pounds, clinched the dual win for Michigan with a 6-2 decision over Dominick Serrano. Ragusin scored early and late in the bout, limp-arming out for a takedown on the edge in the first period and icing the match with a single leg late in the third before riding it out for 1:02 in time advantage.
Michigan will wrap up its Big Ten dual slate with two meets next weekend. The Wolverines will travel to Bloomington, Ind., for a 7 p.m. dual against Indiana on Friday (Feb. 11) at Wilkinson Hall before hosting in-state rival Michigan State at noon on Sunday (Feb. 13) at Cliff Keen Arena.
