MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team claimed seven individual bouts, including each of the final five to surge past No. 21 Central Michigan 28-12 in its dual-meet finale on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 20) at McGuirk Arena.
Down by four points at intermission, the Wolverines reeled off five straight wins after the break, including three bonus wins at the upperweights, to clinch the dual at 197 pounds.
Junior/sophomore Cameron Amine, ranked 14th at 165 pounds, kickstarted the rally with a 4-2 decision over Tracy Hubbard, chasing down a low ankle shot to score the bout's lone takedown in the first period and riding for the bulk of the third to accumulate 2:26 in time advantage.
Graduate students Logan Massa and Myles Amine earned back-to-back major decisions at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively, to retake the lead for Michigan. Massa, ranked fifth nationally, defeated Bret Fedewa, 13-2, for his third straight bonus win. He went big in the first period, scoring an early six points on a feet-to-back inside trip before two more takedowns, a reversal and 3:44 in riding time.
Amine, ranked second at 184 pounds, cruised to a 20-7 major decision against Ben Cushman with six takedowns. Like Massa, he broke it open early, transitioning a high crotch into a four-point leg turk in the first period. He pursued the technical fall with four takedowns in the third and was in deep in a flurry in the waning seconds but ran out of time.
Graduate student Patrick Brucki, ranked 10th at 197 pounds, sealed the dual with a second-period pin against Aaron Bolo -- his fourth fall of the season. Brucki scored four takedowns, two apiece in the first and second periods, and transitioned from a reattack single to a leg turk for swipes and the fall at the 4:15 mark.
Senior heavyweight Mason Parris, ranked third nationally, closed out the dual with a 7-4 decision over eighth-ranked and familiar foe Matt Stencel in the final bout. Parris scored on a single leg and a double leg in the first and accumulated gobs of riding time through the opening two frames, finishing the bout with 2:24 time advantage. It was Parris' fourth straight win against the Chippewa since splitting matchups as a true freshman.
The Wolverines also claimed the dual's opening two matches. Fifth-year senior Jack Medley won a gritty 5-2 decision over Brock Bergelin at 125 pounds, scoring on a single leg in the opening minute before icing the bout with another out of a scramble in the final 10 seconds.
Sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin, ranked eighth, poured on points en route to a 24-9 technical fall over Vince Perez at 133 pounds, scoring 10 total takedowns -- six in the first period and four in the second, including a first-period headlock to tack on four near-fall points. He finished the match early with an ankle pick at the 4:29 mark.
Michigan (12-1) will have two weeks to prepare for the 2022 Big Ten Conference Championships, slated for Saturday and Sunday, March 5-6, in Lincoln, Neb. Action will begin at 10 a.m. CST on Saturday and 11 a.m. CST on Sunday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
