Hillmon's 29 Points Lead Wolverines to First Season Sweep of No. 13 Terrapins

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team ended the third quarter on a 21-11 run to take control of the contest, completing a season sweep of No. 13 Maryland behind a 71-59 win Sunday afternoon (Feb. 20) at Crisler Center. It is the first season sweep of Maryland for the Wolverines in program history.
Naz Hillmon recorded another double-double, going for 29 points on 10-for-15 shooting and grabbing 11 rebounds. Maddie Nolan finished with 11 points, five boards, two assists and a steal, with Laila Phelia turning in 11 points and six boards. U-M held a 45-27 advantage on the glass, while holding the Terps to just 33.3 percent shooting (21-for-63) from the field.
Michigan started fast, racing out to a 7-2 lead on a Nolan corner triple at the 5:50 mark of the first quarter. The Terrapins slowly chipped away at Michigan's lead, eventually taking a 13-11 lead after 10 minutes.
Maryland scored the first four points of the second quarter for a 17-11 lead before Emily Kiser hit a left-wing triple at the 8:22 mark to pull Michigan back within a possession.
Neither team had much offensive success in the frame, as Michigan hit the break tied at 24 with Maryland following an Amy Dilk jumper on U-M's final possession of the half.
Maryland opened the third quarter with a pair of triples before Phelia went on a personal 5-0 run, including a triple to beat the shot clock, to bring Michigan back within a point (30-29) with 6:23 remaining in the quarter.
U-M got four straight points from Elise Stuck off the bench, staying within a point of the Terps with 4:22 on the third-quarter clock. Michigan grabbed the lead off a Hillmon three-point play with 3:15 left, which was pushed to three, 40-37, when Danielle Rauch hit a floater to beat the shot clock at 1:58 to go.
Michigan's lead grew to six points off a pair of Phelia free throws with 55 ticks left in the third, but Maryland answered with a basket on its final try for a 45-41 Michigan lead after 30 minutes.
The Terps struck first in the fourth quarter, but Michigan countered with a 10-0 run for a 55-43 lead with 6:35 remaining. Hillmon started the run with a three-point play, with Rauch connecting on a corner triple with 7:51 remaining to force a Maryland timeout. U-M continued the run after the break, getting layups from Phelia and Nolan to complete the run.
Maryland hit back-to-back triples to climb within five points, 64-59, with 57 seconds left in the game. Nolan split a pair at the line and Maryland missed a layup on the ensuing possession, with Michigan closing by hitting 6-for-6 at the free-throw line to preserve the win.
U-M closes out the home portion of its schedule Thursday (Feb. 24), hosting Michigan State at 6 p.m. The senior class will be honored prior to the game, which is set for 6 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
