ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team used a 17-2 run in the first quarter after falling behind 4-0 to take control of the game, knocking off Rutgers 76-47 on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 9) at Crisler Center.
Michigan had a trio of double-figure scorers in Naz Hillmon (19 points, six rebounds, four assists), Leigha Brown (19 points, three boards, two assists) and Maddie Nolan (14 points). Nolan was a perfect 4-for-4 from deep as Michigan shot 60.0 percent (9-for-14) from three-point range. The Wolverines shot 56.3 percent from the field (27-for-48) on the game and handed out 13 assists, led by four each from Hillmon and Amy Dilk.
Michigan was in an early 4-0 hole before scoring 17 of the next 19 points for a 17-6 lead after 10 minutes. Back-to-back triples from Dilk and Brown capped a 12-0 spurt to end the first quarter.
Rutgers scored first in the second quarter, but Hillmon found Nolan for her second triple of the day to jumpstart an 8-0 run for the Wolverines to extend the lead to 25-8 with 7:51 on the clock.
The Scarlet Knights closed within 10, 27-17, before Nolan's third triple ignited a 10-0 run that was capped by a Hillmon layup with 3:16 on the second-quarter clock as Michigan's lead grew to 20.
U-M hit the break with a 44-29 lead on the strength of 8-for-10 shooting from distance, paced by Nolan's 4-for-4 effort. Michigan shot 61.9 percent (13-for-21) in the first 20 minutes while holding Rutgers to 39.3 percent shooting (11-for-28). In addition to Nolan's 12 points, Brown had 16 first-half points.
Michigan kept its foot on the gas in the third quarter, leading by as many as 31 in the frame behind seven points from Hillmon and six from Cameron Williams. Michigan made 10 of its 16 shots in the third quarter, with Rutgers converting on just three of its 11 attempts.
The Maize and Blue scored seven straight on a Dilk free throw and three consecutive layups from Hillmon, forcing a Rutgers timeout with 5:41 remaining and the home team in front 75-41.
Michigan stayed in control the rest of the way, winning 76-47 over Rutgers.
U-M is on the road for two straight, starting with a Thursday (Jan. 13) trip to Penn State. The game is set for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
