WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team rebounded from its first dual loss of the season Friday (Jan. 28) at the ITA Kick-Off with a resounding 4-0 decision over Southern Methodist University in the consolation match on Saturday (Jan. 29) at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
The Wolverines claimed the doubles point for the third consecutive match, winning at both No. 2 and No. 3. The freshman duo of Gavin Young and Will Cooksey cruised to a 6-2 win at No. 3, and was followed up by senior Patrick Maloney and grad student Nick Beaty capturing a 6-4 win at No. 2, their second straight victory.
Beaty made quick work of Louis Cloud in his singles match to push Michigan ahead 2-0, as he earned his first dual win of the season, 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Nino Ehrenschneider followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Pranav Kumar at No. 5 singles, as Ehrenschneider improves to 9-4 in singles play.
Sophomore Jacob Bickersteth won his fourth consecutive singles match, taking down Liam Krall in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2. The match gave Michigan the four team points needed to secure the win and improve to 3-1 on the season.
The Wolverines next will travel to Cambridge, Mass., to take on Harvard on Sunday (Feb. 6) at noon.
