CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team rallied from a 2-0 deficit, winning three straight singles matches to take the lead. However, No. 19 Harvard won the last two matches in third sets to take a 4-3 decision on Sunday (Feb. 6) at Murr Center. The loss was U-M's first against the Crimson.
Patrick Maloney delivered the first point towards Michigan's team score as he picked up his first win over a ranked opponent. He topped No. 86 Daniel Milavsky 6-4, 6-1 to improve to 11-6 in singles play on the year.
No. 43 Gavin Young got right back on track after his seven-match win streak was halted last weekend against Wake Forest. He captured matching 6-3 sets and is now 14-4 on the season.
Nick Beaty lifted Michigan ahead in the team score, taking No. 6 singles from David Lines. Beaty squeaked out a 7-6 first set before dominating in the second 6-2.
No. 67 Jacob Bickersteth had a four-match win streak come to an end versus No. 57 Brian Shi. It was the fifth match of the year against a ranked opponent for Bickersteth, who already had two wins over ranked foes. Bickersteth jumped out a 6-2 win in the first set and was tied at 2-2 in the second, but Shi took four of the next five points to take the set 6-3. Down 5-1 in the third set, Bickersteth battled, winning the next three points to make it a 5-4, before Shi claimed the final point and the match.
Ondrej Styler played in just his second dual match of the season and was up against No. 108-ranked Harris Walker, who took a 6-4 first set before Styler won 7-5 in the second. With the team match coming down to the third set, both teams stood aside Court 3. Walker looked to be walking away with the win, jumping ahead 4-1, but Styler won four of the next five points to make it a one-point set. Walker won the last two points to take the 6-4 set and the match to give Harvard the 4-3 team win.
Andrew Fenty and Ehrenschneider picked up a huge win at No. 1 doubles, defeating the No. 11-ranked pair of Shi and Milavsky 6-4.
Michigan will begin a two-match homestand on Friday (Feb. 11) at 5 p.m., when it hosts Illinois in a non-conference contest at the Varsity Tennis Center.
