Beaty, Young Win Doubles Qualifying Backdraw Final at Battle of the Bay Invite

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Senior Nick Beaty and sophomore transfer Gavin Young won the doubles qualifying draw consolation final as the University of Michigan men's tennis program opened the fall season at the Battle in the Bay at the California Tennis Club from Thursday through Sunday (Sept. 15-19).
The pair defeated Sam Rubell/Paul Boretto of USC 8-3 in the back draw final, one day after taking down Andre Illagen and Axel Labrunie of Hawaii in the semifinals by a score of 8-3. They started the Invitational with an 8-5 loss to Stevie Gould and Mitchell Johnson of San Francisco, which marked their first time playing as a tandem.
Each played three singles matches with Young winning two of three. He posted a 6-2, 7-5 win over Nil Giraldez of San Francisco in the Round of 32 before falling to Bradley Frye of USC, 6-4, 6-2. In an extra match he topped Andrew Rogers of Pepperdine, 6-3, 6-4.
Beaty grabbed a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (5) win over Marvin Schaber of San Diego in the consolation round of 16. It took another third set to determine the quarterfinal winner between Beaty and Fabien Salle of Arizona State after they split 7-5 scores in the first two. Salle took the 1-0 (4) win. Beaty began the Invitational with yet another match that was decided by a third set, as he fell to Andre Illagan of Hawaii, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (3).
Michigan will split its squad next weekend as it competes at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. (Sept. 24-26) and the Laver Cup in Boston, Mass. (Sept. 24-26).
