CARMEL, Ind. -- Battling 20 mph crosswinds at the Crooked Stick Golf Club, the University of Michigan men's golf team opened the Big Ten Championships with a 319 team total Friday (April 30) and is in 14th place after 18 holes.
Windy conditions saw scores elevated across the board on the first day of play. Despite the conditions, senior Charlie Pilon continued his strong play in his first postseason event since 2019.
Starting on the 10th hole, Pilon opened with six straight pars before back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 16 and 17 had him make the turn to the front side at two-over par. That is where he stayed as he played par golf with nine straight to give him 16 total in his opening 18. With a 74 (+3), he finds himself tied for seventh.
With a U-M best two birdies, graduate student Brent Ito is tied for 29th after his opening-round 78, while freshman Will Anderson is tied for 50th following his 81 first-round tally.
The Wolverines will be paired with Nebraska and Wisconsin for the second day of the championships on Saturday (May 1) at 10:25 a.m. off the 10th tee.
